HELP: Tub Rough In Dimensions

My house was build about 1 year ago. In the unfinished basement a bathroom was roughed in. The dimensions from the surface of stud-to-stud where the bathtub would be measures 63.25". All tubs that I find are 60" and the installation dirs say to frame so that there is 1/8" clearance on each side. So that means I need 60.25" . . . any ideas why the builder made it 63.25"???? Am I missing something???

A rough opening is what it sounds like rough. I would say they were unsure how or who was doing the tub installation leaving room for them to do what whoever needs to do. Having an opening too large is much easier solved by making smaller than having to reframe making the opening larger.

I would suspect this is why the framed a larger rough opening.

Some people like a shelf on the front or back end of the tub to handle shampoo, etc. 3" sounds like a good shelf. Use a peice of solid material, like a marble door threshold, to get from the wall to the tub dimention to avoid tile joint leakage, if there is water sitting on the "shelf".
