#1784: Running cat5 and security sys wire from house to garage Author: Dan, Posted: 19 Nov 2002 10:51 pm
----
I'm putting in a service line (220v 100 amp) from the house to the garage. I want to use the underground ditch for this to also run cat5 cable to the garage for telephone and computer use. I also want to run a line for a security/alarm system. What I need to know is can I run these two lines through the same conduit (approx 150 ft) about 6-8 inches above the electric cable?

Make sure that the cat 5 cable choosen is rated for outdoor use, and it is a continous run. There is variety of cat 5 types , some even rated for direct burial.
Usually I would consider 6 to 8 inches likely ok , but you are proposing to use 100 amp 220 v service line , and if you use that capacity I would say try to keep at least a 1 foot or more separation between this electrical line and your cat 5's.

Thanks, I didn't know if there was outdoor rated cat5 or not. I'll make sure that's what I get and lay it at least a foot above the electrical cable.
