Hi!
I'm building my own home. I'd like to have a security system to monitor my smokes. However, I'll probably never have a phone line (right of way issues). I do have several wireless networks available in my area. Anybody know of any systems that use cell networks?
Thanks!

Sure, you can get a cell system to hook on any security system for a few hundred bucks. These are called "Tellular adaptors".
By the way, there are cradles that you can get to sit a cell phone into that basically makes every regular phone jack in the house work off that cell phone. You don't need a phone line from the telco. It's called a "cellular POTS adaptor", or sometimes "dock and talk" adaptor. These are a little over 100 bucks.

Ademco has what is known as alarmnet (www.alarmnet.com) - it is a large number of "backup" systems which can also serve as primary monitoring - they cost between 6 and 16 dollars a month depending on security level (the $16/mo is for banks and jewelry stores, etc) - but they do support wireless coverage without the sometimes kludgy interface to a cellphone. The alarmnet-c for example sends the alarm codes on the control channel and never opens a voice channel for the transmission - it is also verified by the system in case your antenna gets damaged. This is their alarmnet-c (for cellular) Alarmnet-A is used in highly populated areas for 2-way radio backup on frequencies dedicated to alarm monitoring. There is also an alarmnet-i for internet connectivity. I use this with my customers who are on microwave internet links - if their phone service goes out, their microwave internet won't so the alarm will go through.
