My son has a 1996 Honda Accord he bought last week. When the car is is at idle without pressing the gas pedal the motor revs up and idles back down, revs up and idles back down etc... The check engine light is not illuminated. Someone told him the O2 sensors are bad? Ever ran into this problem. Heip!!

Sounds like an idle air control issue. I'm not very familiar with Honda's but fuel injected vehicles have a solenoid for controlling the flow of air into the engine at idle and it can gum up which doesn't necessarily trigger the "check engine" light. If you are willing to give it a try, disconnect the air ducting from the air cleaner to the throttle body and have a look inside. If its dirty with soot and sticky material, chances are this is the problem. The fix is usually a good dousing with throttle body cleaner in a spray can. MAKE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that the cleaner you get is safe for O2 sensors and catalytic converters. Carburator cleaner will NOT work and will damage the throttle body. If the cleaner doesn't fix the problem there are ways of removing the IAC (Idle Air Control) assembly and cleaning it but tis tedious.

I have a 1996 honda accord lx non vtech and i have been bustin my brains trying to figure out why my car revs up and down, first when it was cold and now all the time, but i fixed the problem by talking out the throttle and under the throttle their is a bypass spring it came loose and when i fixed it it was fine, if anyone has any questions feel free to ask

I agree on checking the IAC, if it is functioning properly then start checking for vacuum leaks in the vacuum lines and intake. Also do you hear a hissing sound when you depress the brake pedal? If so then the hydrovac brake booster may be bad, when you step on the brake the booster pulls vacuum off the engine for more brake power. The brakes will still work fine but will cause a steady vacuum leak as long the pedal remains depressed. A tech can do a vacuum test on it if you suspect that.
