My Cable company wants $3,600 to run cable from my neighbors property to mine:mad: .
My neighbor has has high speed internet via the cable company (not currently wireless).
There is 350 feet between our houses, and 200 feet of that is wooded, including a creek.
Looking for feedback on if it is feasible to install a wireless network between the two houses.
His current cable modem is in the front of his house, and of course my house is facing the back of his. So I assume I would have to put in a wireless router at his cable modem, then put some type of repeater in the back part of his house (garage). And was hoping to put a repeater in the window at my house. Therefore no "parts" outside.
Any thoughts on if a decent signal would make it to my house?
Dial up is killing me, DSL is not available, Satellite doesn't seem to work with my companys VPN service...

You'd be lucky if there is even a signal at your front door. Walls, trees, ect all knock down signal. If his AP was on his roof, and it was open air, you still would not get a reliable connection due to the distance. Home use equipment is designed for use in -A- home. Besides, if you want to stay "legal" I believe their service agreements state, for use in a single home. This would violate it.

Our cable company did the same thing to our neighbors. They built a house, a house on each side of theirs. $400 to extend 'their' line the length of 1 more telephone pole. They had a dish mounted to the back of their hosue a few days later.

I would think that they cant charge for extending their lines to near your house. Cable companies are just evil pigs. Anything to make a buck. You may want to contact the FCC to see their view on this. Keep bugging your phone company. IF there is enough demand for DSL in a area, they may try to make it possible. I'm a few thousand feet too far for it here, and on the waiting list.

I think this would be a perfect application for a fiber-optic extension from your neighbors house (if he's willing). Get a 400' 62.5u duplex multimode cable and two 100baseFX adapters, and you can have a 100 Mb network in your house. The big issue is can you string the cable between houses in a manner that it won't be broken or damaged. A 6" deep slit trench would probably even work, and use a short run of PVC conduit to cross the creek.
