#1285: Slicing telephone line Author: hscpo1, Posted: 02 Nov 2002 01:54 am
----
I am working on a garage woodshop. I deinstalled a whole house vacuum system (that didn't work) and found that the previous resident had installed a phone line from the dining room, through the garage wall (just a small hole) and ran the phone line up through the hole for the vacuum system into the ceiling and over to the fourth bedroom. There is no slack and is in the way of a large part of the wall that I need to install pegboard. Can I cut the wire, splice it, add more wire and therefore install a junction box or even a phone outlet? I know that phone lines have a number of wires. Is is just a matter or matching color to color? Thanks for the help.

Simply, yes. Try to make your splices accesable for future troubleshooting, although due to the voltage, accessability is not required. Making a new jack, your splice point is a good idea.

Thanks for the help. A junction box is a good idea. I could even put a phone in the shop, although I wouldn't answer it (probably a telemarketer).
