View Full Version : Closet Light Wiring

I have a large closet (storage space), with two entry doors. Since this space is in the basement, I would like to control the lights in the closet using closet light switches, which turn the lights off when the door is closed.

My question is, how to do this with two doors entering the closet. I want the lights on when either door is open, and the lights off when both doors are closed.

From a schematic perspective, this is quite easy: wire the switches in parallel on the hot leg of the supply wire.

However, it's unclear to me how this would be done from an electrical code perspective. Any thoughts?

Run power to the light box. Then run a 12 or 14/2wGrnd Romex cable matching the wire size providing power to the light box as a switch leg from that light box to each door jamb switch that you can buy from the larger electrical wharehouse stores. One 12/2wGrnd Romex cable from that light box to each switch box. Then wire nut the white of each switch leg cable going to the two switches to the black wire of power entering the light box.

Then wire nut the white power coming in to the white wire of the light fixture.

Then wire nut both of the black wires coming from the two switches to the black wire of the light fixture

Then wire nut all bare wires together including any green wires all under the same wire nut.

Then in each switch box connect the black and white wire to the two screws of each switch device.

Then in each switch box connect the bare wire to the green screw of the switch device.

Hope this helps
