I experienced a problem on a Mac OS 9 where I kept getting a low memory warning from AOL. The computer would then have to be restarted with same results when trying to view an auto dealers inventory. The problem was corrected when checking memory parameters for AOL which was set too low, bumping the memory up corrected the problem. Question is I am not familiar with why you would have an "adjustable memory" with your server ( being AOL in this case). Is this the case with all servers? I have never experienced this with another pc or needed to change a servers memory. Why wouldnt you have maximum memory to begin with? Curious.......

I haven't heard of this one. Or of any adjustments needed at the provider. I have tried AOL, but didn't like it, I don't need a voice telling me "You got mail". and also didn't like their interface, I prefer just paying for a connection to the internet and not an interface that I don't need. I think you can still connect to AOL as a normal dial up connection without using their AOL program interface, but may need their interface to get AOL mail. The adjustments may be just changes the buffers / sizes on your own computer

MacOS (up to 9 I believe) didn't work very well with virtual RAM, and each program, when installed, sets up a memory limit. The progam can't go beyond that value, and that was mainly to protect the OS and to increase stability. If, for example, you tried to open too many windows in AOL you'll exceed the set value and the program will complain, if not crash. You had to then manually increase the memory allowment for AOL to a higher number. This has nothing to do with AOL the server. Windows machines don't have this problem as Windows dynamically increases the memory for each program as needed. The only "problem" with Windows is that once the program is closed it doesn't always reclaim the memory.

Thanks for the explaination. I experienced this problem on a friends Mac. Just one of those things I wanted to figure out but couldnt without someone a lot more knowledgable with Macs. My skills are only average a best. Anyway wasnt really sure if it was AOL or the Mac that was generating the error on memory run out. I had a feeling it was something to do with the Mac. Thanks....RL
