As a pre-caution, you should always write down the following info...
name of video/display card
name of modem
name of sound card
name of network card (if it has one)
if there are other cards have those names also..
this info can be found at...
START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL/
SYSTEM THEN DEVICE MANAGER TAB
EXPAND DESIRED SELECTIONS BY CLICKING ON THE + TO THE LEFT OF THE SELECTION, WRITE DOWN ALL INFO EXACTLY AS LISTED.
This makes life much easiler in the event that all the drivers are not found automaticly by the new system. You can always find the drivers on the internet. If you using dial up modem to connect to the internet , it may be a good idea to at least have that driver in advance on a floppy or cd, so you can at least conenct to the internet and find the remaining drivers if necessary.
Hopefully you have a cd burner.
Copy /burn all inportant files , back them up on a cd or something other than the hard drive on the computer.
I recommend this even if doing an upgrade over the existing operating system, and not a complete format & clean install. Things can happen and it is better to do it before. My preference is always a clean install. In other words an unconditional format (which wipes absolutely everything) and new install. But that is my preference, I just find that I can't carry over any problems from before if it is complete clean install.
Operating systems newer than windows 98 are...
windows me
windows 2000
windows xp
If you are happy with your current operating system, and are not experiencing problems or require a feature that is not on your current system.....The old saying is "IF IT AIN'T BROKE- DON'T FIX IT"
It is always a good idea to backup inportant files, hard drives do fail, and usually at the worst time.

Windows 98 second edition is a fine operating system. Many people still like it. I am told by gamers that it is currently the best system to be on.You may not be able to go to xp. It has some minimum hardware requirements.
Unles you have a specific reason to update I stay put with 98. Don't upgrade just for the sake of upgading.
