Dkerr:

My computer is locking up, most of the time when I am running IE, or even better when I go to open IE.

If we was to connect through some type of door, then can you take a look at it from there?

1. can you receive email ok.

2. by locking up , do you mean the computer crashes to the point that you require a reboot to do anything on thecomputer, or is explorer just not excessing web sites ? can you open other non-internet applications when the explorer locks up ?

3. what version of internet explorer are you running ?

4. How are you viewing these forum pages, thru another computer or another browser such as netscape ?

Is there anything else that doesn't work ?

Is there anything recently installed , or new hardware installed?

I can't actually view your computer , there are programs like pcanywhere that can give remote control excess, but at the present time I don;t have that and it would need to be installed on both computers, and having that program open up a ssecurity risk.

Give some clarity /answers to above enquires and we will go from there.

dkerr, I just talked to Art and he bit the bullet and bought a new puter to solve all problems. Problem is new puter now won't connect by modem but only about 20k when the older puter connected at about 49K. His phone connection is about 3' from the debark. The manufacturer's hot line blames the servor and the servor blames the manufacturer. He is will be working on it again late this afternoon. Any ideas?

As for the old puter [about 8 years old] time for a new one. He experienced IE locking up when loading periodically not all the time. When it did lock up he had to do a hard shut down even control alt delete would not work.

Also there is a intranet connection computer to computer that can be made between to puters by phone. Problem doing that in trying to help someone is that when you connect you puter to theirs with all shard files you may also find your puter now with the virus etc. that the linked puter may have. Don't advise that one too much unless close friends and you have seen the other puter personally and have been working on it in person before.

I believe he needed an upgrade on his internet explorer version. If I remember right his problem of locking up hit when you upgrade to a newer version on line of the IE.

If his old computer conencted at dial up at 49k and the new one conencts at 20 k, the only variable between the 2 would likely only be the cord between the computer and the wall jack (if that was changed ?)

things to check...

in the modem properities, max speed should likely be set at 115,900, I know that no modem will connect at that , but it sets teh starting point , then the modem will do a handshaking routine and drop the speed until it is succesfull and then connects at that speed. I usually set this at max. Some say to set it at 57k, I usually go for max, and let the handshaking routine do its job.

Go to settings/control panel/system/device manager/
write down everything listed under modem

Go to the internet at the modem's manufacturers site, get the latest driver for the operating system being used and the modem model used.

Worst comes to worst , you can always try swapping modems and remove the modem in the new computer and install the modem from the old computer into the new, will need the old modems driver to install.

Formating the old computers hard drive and reinstalling the system / applications may have solved his problems without buying a new computer, it takes about half a day work, by the time you format / reinstall, get all your updates at microsoft update, perhaps a bit longer if you got dialup and not high speed.

I usually redo mine at least 2 times a year.

They consider a pentium 166 perferably with mmx as a min. for high speed. And I would say that is really the min. needed for pain free internet use even with dialup.

That is a common fault with manuafacturers and internet providers, if they don't know the solution then pass the buck to the other guy.

One senerio is that certain modems are more affected by noise /interference than others , should this be the case swapping the modems may solve the problem.

Make certain that the phone line is conencted to the line jack of the modem and not the phone jack.

In interference is suspected - a ferite coil or bead may help, see the interference section of the site.

Also use the exact same cord between the demark or wall jack to modem as was used on his old computer.

I find that I often like with a new computer , that I like to format and redo the system, because I hate having a computer set up according to what the maker feels thinks I should have on it or set up as. I usually only buy equipment and setup it up and install teh system as I want it. I also prefer if software is included that I have the individual install cd's for teh operating system and each included application, and not just a recover cd, that can only be installed exactly as the maker wants it.

Ok. Thanks guys..

Problem one solved. Got new P.C. I think 6 years is long enough one the old one........

Problem two, Wg addressed for me while I could not connect. Thanks.

Problem ended up being in a modem setting in the program that was installed for the modem. There is what the program is calling, "Quick Connect" with a check box next to it. My understanding is it trys to establish a connection faster then norm. In doing so the server was not understanding the modem then dropping the connection. I just unchecked the box to disable "Quick connect" and guess what ? All fine now...

Thanks guys..

Ps. New flat screen !! "Its the bomb"...Oh and that is new updated wording for something "good", thats what my 12year old tells me...

Art just to catch your son up and break his bubble easy. That term "it the bomb" was used when I was a kid 40 years ago. Be easy on him though may cause him nightmares or something for him to find out he is using a new term he grandpa used, ha ha.

Good Luck and I am now wishing for a new puter to keep up with the Jones's ya know. Could I just have the bill for the new puter sent to you as an early xmas present for me? Just trying!
