dKerr,
I lost the sound card a few days ago. Don't know what happened - maybe the little ones click on the wrong thing. Anyway when I go to
control panel and click on the sounds icom it won't do anything. I went in under add/rem hardware and clicked on multimedia and everthing in this folder comes up OK .
Should i reinstall the sound card driver or do you have any ideas that i might try first.
Thanks
John

Do have the little speaker icon on the bottom right beside the clock? Does it have a red X through it? If it does then it is muted. Click on it. Check the level of the volume controls. Make sure they ae not set to zero. Some programs will mess with the settings.

check -
settings/control panel/system/device manager
expand where it says "sound"
are there any ? or ! or x in that area, what is listed here.
Also check if the speaker is in the system box (bottom right), open to see if nothing is muted.
Check speaker wires that the jack hasn't pulled out.

Dkerr,
Ichecked all the connections , they are fine.
I do not have the speaker icon to check if the audio is muted . Can i find this out going adifferent route?
I went in under device manager and clicked on "sound, video, etc"
Here is what is listed :
Crystal WDM Audio Codec
MPU-401 Compatible
MWave Game port Joystick
Wave Device for Voice Modem
I can put an Audio CD in and the drive is working and the CDplayer window shows that the disc is running.

1st back to device manager
you said the following was listed...
Crystal WDM Audio Codec
MPU-401 Compatible
MWave Game port Joystick
Wave Device for Voice Modem
Is there a ? or a ! or a x beside any of these ?
Next
settings/control panel/sounds and multimedia/
make sure that "show volume control on the taskbar" is checked
If any of the items for sound has a ?, x, ! on it then try this...
delete/remove all of...
Crystal WDM Audio Codec
MPU-401 Compatible
MWave Game port Joystick
Wave Device for Voice Modem
now close out control panel, and reboot the computer, you should get a found new hardware routine apone reboot and it should try to find drivers for the devices found (ie sound), perhaps correcting a previosu problem. The drivers should exist on the hard drive so it should find the drivers. You may have the sound drivers on a floppy or cd somewhere also, but most likely since they were already once installed the drivers will be found automaticly.

Don
There are no x,? etc on any of the items listed under sound when i go in thru device manager.
When I go to control panel and click on the multimedia or sound icon nothing happens.
I guess i should just go with deleting all items under sounds and reboot.
what i think may have caused this is the 8 year old here got a game disc from his grandmother and i think he tried to install it and in the process click on the wrong button and took away a driver or file.
One other note : when disc the power cable from the external speakers and plug it back in I can hear a slight static noise when the connect is rejoined for a second.

try deleting and reboot and let it go thru the re-install process.
there could also be a conflict between the game and windows/drivers.
Sometimes games may have its own drivers and may prompt you during the install process rather you wish to overwrite.
Uninstall the game if necessary , make sure the game is compatable with your version of windows. You can make another attempt at the gaem install once your sound is back if the game is compatabel with your system.
