Small ranch built in the 50's, located in S.E. Michigan. Original insulation has about 1 inch of fiberglass type of material with paper on both sides, at one point in time a previous owner had added 3 1/2 in. on top of that with the moisture paper facing up and away from living area. All insulation was tucked nice and tight covering the soffit. When I moved here a while ago I added many, many soffit vents and from inside the attic I sliced through all the insulation and pulled it away from the soffit untill I saw light coming through.
Now the plan...I would like to remove all the old insulation and replace it with R-19 (6 in.) for starters and staple the plastic airchutes between each rafter so my soffits stay free from obstruction when I add yet another 6 inches (blown or batt) next year.
My question .....Is best to use the faced or unfaced for my first new layer? I do know the faced side is suppose to down (toward living area) but while shopping for prices I get conflicting oppinions as the preferred way of insulating attics...some say moisture barrier and some say not.....
