Three years ago we had installed a Southern facing patio, 20 x24, stamped concrete. It has been virtually unusable during the summer, due to the hot sun and dark concrete. I decided to build a sun shade, and opted for a pergola made from Douglas Fir. I primed and painted with Dulux paint, and up she went.
The basic frame is 2 x 10's, which doesn't provide much shade, so over the top, I ran 1 x 2's perpendicular. Several hundred of them, nailed together to form sheets of various sizes. They are just laid on top, and I'll take them off and store them over the winter, letting the winter sun shine through.
All in all, a successful solution to a nagging issue. And most importantly, the wife loves it!
