I'm replacing my electric stove with a gas one. Fortunately, I have a gas line running into the house for the hot water heater, etc. My question is, how and where do I tap into that black pipe so I can run a line to the location of the new gas stove? Can I just insert a t in the pipe anywhere in the basement? I may be missing some important point here too. any advice would be appreicated!

You need to make sure that the place that you tap off of has enough volume (fat enough pipe) to supply gas to the gas range and the water heater. Normally the main gas line gets smaller as the appliances branch off. You can't simply branch off the little 1/2" line that feeds the water heater. You need to tap off back where the line is much bigger.
