UF 6/3 cable

Plan on installing a sub panel in detached garage (50 amp) by burying UF 6/3 cable. In the areas inside my home and garage can I pull this cable through studs/joists or does it need to be in conduit. I can install it in a way that will not be subject to "physical damage"

Also, part of the underground run will be under a concrete sidewalk .. how far underground does the cable need to be?

Yes, you can run it through joists and studs. Under a sidewalk used for single family dwelling use only 18" if in an trench not covered by anything but good ole dirt 24 ". You will discover that #6 UF is a bear to work with, it will try your patience for sure. I much prefer PVC conduit installations using thhn/thwn individual wires. If your on a budget though they do make direct burial cable that is nearly identical to round NM-B cable that has jacketed #6 awg stranded copper thhn/thwn wires listed for direct burial. It beats the heck out of uf cable.

That's the first thing I thought when I first saw this thread. I had to read it to figure out how "Bind, Torture, Kill" related to wiring.

You wont find it at the home centers, you need to go to a local electrical supply.

The 'round stuff' is called type TC cable or "tray cable".
