Thru-hull fasteners

I want to make my own swim platform off the back of my 22 foot '87 Bayliner Trophy. My crew (wife) is large and the swim platforms I have seen are pretty weak-looking. I'm thinking of stainless steel angle-iron brackets bolted through the transom and a nice deckboard surface on top.
Does this sound feasible? Can you drill holes and install bolts through your transom? Any tips or advice?

A good quality ladder manufactured for a boat is stronger than it looks. I know many 250 pounders climbing up those ladders since I was a kid. If you buy a good quality ladder you should be fine.

You can drill through the hull if you can get to the other side to install flat washer and nut. Just drill the hole to fit your bolt then use a caulking to fill the hole around the bolt you should be fine.
