The previous owners of my house constructed a small addition on the gable end of the house. At the roof, they cantilevered the 1x10 roof sheathing over the gable by about a foot. They didn't install a fascia or any kind of support for this overhang. I would like to trim the overhang back flush with the gable end wall to match the rest of the gables on the house (no overhangs). The boards are also showing signs of rot.
I was going to first cut the asphalt shings with a knife and then cut the boards off with a circular saw from above. I would then install rake flashing. I have read that the shingles should overhang the rake flashing by a 1/2" or so. If I cut the boards and shingles as I described above, there will be no overhang of the shingles (they will be cut flush with the rake flashing). Is this a problem? If so, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could cut the boards off, but still overhang the shingles by 1/2"? I thought of cutting the boards off from below, but I can't get the circular saw close enough to the wall.
Thanks for any suggestions!
David
