I redid a subfloor in my bathroom and was told that I shouldn't run the backerboard for the tile under the tub. Should I add another layer of plywood subfloor (just under the tub area) so that the backerboard and plywood under the tub are equal height? I just wasn't sure if I should put down the tub, then lay backerboard and tile around it, which would leave it about 3/4 to 1" or so below the tile height.

There is normally a lip on the tub that the backer board should lip over. Then the tile. It does not matter under the tub but may be drywalled to seal the wall area under the tub if on an outside wall.
The backer board should lay over the tub lip then the tile to the backer board so water can shed into the tub rather than along the wall under the tub inviting rot.
Hope this helps

You can put a layer of mortar down to create a solid base for the tub, that's the advice I got when doing the same thing. Out of curiosity, what was the reason for not suing backerboard?
