Poulan lawn tractor (similar to Craftsman?) won't start: the ammeter shows draw but there is neither lights nor starter. I haven't checked the bulbs, but I doubt they would affect the starter. Would any of the safety switches cut out the lights? Could it be burned out lights and a bad solenoid?

Lights run only when the engine runs.
Make sure your battery is charged.
THere is usualy a safety switch on the clutch/brake pedal, blade engagement lever, and your seat. If any of these are not in their proper positions, the solenoid will not even think about firing. Some mowers will also want to be in neutral.
You can test your solenoid with a jumper from the battery (or the battery conncetion of the 'noid) to the trigger wire (about a 14-16 gauge wire coming out.. the rest are probably 4 gauge). make sure you pull your spark plug wire before doing this. A spinning blade next to your feet is not a good thing.

The ammeter suggested power to the solenoid so I checked it first. Tapping the switch loosened it up. I did buy a fresh battery just to give a little extra kick. Works fine now - thanks!
