View Full Version : Removing an unused roof vent

I'm doing a kitchen remodel and the range and vent hood will be moving to a different wall.

The old 3 x 10" vent runs straight up through the roof (it's a single story house) within a partition wall that I would like to remove.

I don't know how to remove the old roof vent, at least where it goes through the roof.

What's the best way to do this?

There is no attic in this house; the ceiling is the bottom of the roof. The house was a cheap desert vacation home when it was built 50 years ago. The roof is decking material ("car decking"); the ceiling-side of the roof has 2" of Celotex board for 'insulation'. On the outside, the decking is covered with 1"-2" of foam insulation.

Thanks

Dave

Dave,

I'm no expert, but my two cents says pull the vent down through the ceiling and attempt to seal the opening. I'd try to get some of the same decking material, and after laying caulk all around the perimeter, put it in place over the hole left from removing the vent. Make sure the edges are sealed nice and tight with caulk or roofing cement, and she should be okay from the outside. From inside the house, again try to get whatever material is there to use to patch the opening.

I'm not sure if any of that helps, but my motto has always been, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I would nail a 2 x 12 from rafter to rafter under the decking against the decking. Then on top of the roof cut a 1x12 in a circle that will fit into the hole where the vent was making the decking flush again. Screw this circle piece of wood to the 2x12 under the decking to hold in place. Then remove the cut roofing and patch in same as any shingle repair is done piecing back in the new roofing as if it were originally installed.

Hope this helps
