Patio Door header

We are going to be replacing the sliding patio door with one that swings out. It is the same height as the old one but is 3 inches longer.

Do I need to build a new header or can I somehow add to the existing header?

They don't make board stretchers. You need a new header sized to carry the load over the larger span if you plan on the wider span whether inches or feet. A board will only reach normal length won't stretch if it won't reach.
