Our drain in the bathtub has to be held down for the water to drain. If we let it go, it simply closes the valve? Is this an easy fix? I've taken off the cover and there is a spring mech, with a couple of extensions going down to the drain, but I have no idea how it mechanically works?
Thanks in advance,
Mr T

(Ive been missing this mechanism from my bath tub for about 5 years now, but doing the best i can from memory)
The problem is in that spring mech. It may be easier (unless you need to match hardware) to just get a new one. Be carefull not to drop the rest of the plunger mechanism into the drain as you pull it out....

Thanks,
It worked like a charm (the new one that is). Only cost $6 vs. a plumber call. Thanks again, saved lots of $$$$$.

Great to hear!
Come fix mine now. Sometime before we moved in (its a vacent repo house) the mech on our tub fell apart. THe plunger is wedged in the drain pipe and I think it is partially blocking the drain. But our bathrooms are the next major indoor project.

Take a wet wash rag, shove it into the drain shoe.
Then, take a powerful shop wet vac and remove the overflow plate and wrap a wet rag around the hose where it goes into the opening to make it air tight.
9 times out of 10 you can dislodge that loose part inside the assembly and it will come up. Must have good suction though.
Really the only option in a situation where you cannot access the drain from below or from the back of unit.
