View Full Version : Recessed lighting in vinyl porch ceiling??

I want to replace 4 "ball" fixtures on my front porch with recessed lights. I took one of the fixtures down tonight to see what was up there and found that the porch ceiling is really only ridged vinyl sheeting.

The light fixture is connected to a joist mounted, round wiring box on the topside of the vinyl, and there appears to be at least some strapping running the length of the porch above the vinyl. But no solid sheeting.

No living space above the porch, just shallow, sloped porch roof.

How can I put recessed lights up there? Do they make something that can side attach to a joist/rafter like a wiring box?? Do I need a put a piece of plywood up there somehow?

Thanks for any advice, I can post pics if needed...

If the framing is spaced 2 bys repetitive 16" on center then you can buy recessed light tanks that have expansion bars that will reach from joist to joist supporting the fixture just cutting a hole in the siding for the light tank to pass through for the lens cover.

If your framing spacing is beyond 16" on center then you can frame in 2x4s from joist to joist 16" apart centering over where you want to install the recessed tank. Then you can again use the recessed tanks with the expanding mounting brackets nailing to those blocks installed vertically.

Sorry about the late reply I have been very busy due to spring
