I have an old house house in South Florida that was built in 1960. Its a one story with a very low pitch roof I think around 3 inches for every foot. The older AC guys have called this a hot box type attic. A considerable source of heat gain for my AC they said.

I will be replacing the ceiling sheet rock and of course will have plenty of access to the attic. I have a friend that can spray that polyurathane (might have that one wrong) insulation inbetween the roof rafters. They are 3 1/2 inches thick. My neighbors with the same typ house have added 2" of insulation on top of the roof with good results. I don't want to re-roof yet or care for those high facias.

Is there anything wrong with doing this and will this make an a good improvment? It seams like a good idea and my cosst is very little. I assume I would have to watch and make sure the sofits don't get closed. I do want to improve efficiency asmuch as I can.

By the way I will be puttng new insulation on top of the sheet rock ceilings too.

Thank you in advance for your time with this.

I've heard that a radiant heat barrier is a good thing for hot areas. It's plastic film. I think it goes just under the roof deck -- hanging from the rafters.

The problem with that is I don't have access. The roof is 36" at the peak. The spray applicator can shoot I am told form the center where I have the ceiling down over to areas over other rooms. They a wand they can attach too.

I just want to know if this product will work on the roofing rafters and I am not thinking this is some wild idea.

Thanks
