I recently signed up for DSL for the first time. Two days prior to my DSL activation date I started experiencing problems with the jacks in my partially finished basement. Most of the time I just have heavy static when I try to use the phone. Occasionally I can get a clean dial tone.

I bought my house 3 years ago and never had a problem with the basement jacks before. The house was built in 1991 and the basement was partially finished around 1996.

Have no problem with the phones or DSL on the main level or upstairs jacks - only the basement.

I assume its not a coincidence the timing of my problem with my DSL activation and was hoping someone might have some insight. Tried contacting tech rep for DSL/phone provider but the folks in India only could offer to arrange a service call.

Can you get to the wires to the basement jacks? Do they go straight to the network interface on the side of your house, or do they connect to another jack? If you have some good jacks and some bad, the point where the bad jacks connect to something is most likley your problem point.

I would look in your network interface first, see if you have multiple sets of wires coming off the screws.

Solid copper wire can break easy if its flexed alot, or the wire was scored/scratched where the insulation was cut off. Give the wires a light tug where they are screwed down, if it comes off easy, the copper broke inside the insulation. strip and reattach. Make sure the screws are tight and there is no corossion under them.

Do you have the DSL filters on each jack?
