the other day in my "air comp. problem" thread, i tried to attach a pic of the starter taken with my kodak camera - file too large - so i put it on the lowest setting and took another pic - file too large - so i took one with my cheap HP camera and it just fit. then i took a pic of the pres. sw. and put it in the next post. my question...how did BORNINPA get all the pics of his panels/wiring in ELEC. - EXISTING HOMES in 1 post?

You need a software package that will let you alter how your jpeg image was built. Some of the packages that come with your camera will allow you to alter the size and/or number of pixels per inch, or the compression ratio. What you need to do to is reduce the quality in some way to make the file smaller. Increasing the compression is probably the worst way (a camera setting that does this could be Fine or Normal settings with the resolution being the same). Changing the size in inches may just squish all the pixels into a smaller area which won't help either. What you need to do is specify the image size in fewer pixels or specify the size in inches and reduce the pixels per inch. The size you end up with will also affect how big it is on the screen. Sometimes, smaller photos are nicer to see in the forum, as the really wide ones allow the text to get wide too and you have to use the scroll bar to read the text.

Software like Adobe Photo Deluxe and Adobe Photoshop will do this. See if the software that came with your camera will allow you to change the photo size and then look at the file properties (right click on it) to see if its file size in bytes was actually reduced.

What was the size of the picture you were trying to attach and what type (jpg, gif, etc)

i think jpeg
i think i can alter it on the HP software, but i can't see the same function on the Kodak...it's probably there, but i think they like to make it complicated enough so we get aggravated trying to figure it out...i'll look tonight...or i'll get the 8 year old kid from down the road to help me...he'll know what to do! :D

One of the simplest ways to change a picture format is the bring up the picture in Microsoft PAINT, and then pics "Save As" and choose another file format. You can also pick "Image", "Strech/Skew" in Paint and shrink the picture down by a certain percentage to get it smaller.

I use Fotocanvas (origionaly made by ACD systems, but i think it got sold off. I found a few links for the free trial on the internet. Its easy to use, made mainly for editing digital images. I used it for my photos under the 'punchdown block' thread under the computer catagory.

The trick with .jpg's is the image quality. Ususaly when you do a save as, it will give you a option (0-100), 100 being the highest quality. If you kick it down to about 50-60 it will give you a good viewable pic, but under 100k. This way you can keep the image large enough to see.

jpg is the best file format to use for images. stay away from bmp's as they get very large very fast (bmp is paint's default format). png is growing fast, but not all browsers support it yet.

i tried the stuff you guys said to no avail - i can't seem to find anything to lower the image quality.
does microsoft - PICTURE IT have that feature...i looked, but can't find.

if not, i'll look into getting some type of photo editing software.

It is only a 30 day trial though, but if you just got a few pics to do, it'l get you by.. I dont think ACD ownes this program anymore though.

I am using a older version of this, (came with some camera accessory package that I bought on clearance). Speaking of that, what brand is the cam? Mine (nikkon) came with some editing software, but i never installed it. Check your cd's.

I like Photoshop, but it costs $$. Photoshop Elements is a great alternative, with a lot of the features of Photoshop, but aimed at photo editing (costs around $90). The "Save for Web..." feature in Photoshop is awesome (there is a similar option in Photoshop Elements). Simply select a picture, go to Save for Web and you will be presented with a preview of the picture. Adjust the settings (quality, file type, etc.) and you will see the preview instantly. More importantly, it shows you the file size according to the settings you select.

MR T...i'll try the download tonight...thanks

my KODAK 6490 that i take most pics with shows - file too large - even on poorest setting.
the HP i got with a printer was the camera i took the air comp. starter pics with.

from another thread - you said 2 acres...that calculates to 2-4 beers, depending on how many trees, etc. to cut around. :D
that's part of my workload for today...getting ready...
too bad you're not closer...i'll work for beer  :D

this pic is with the HP...and there's a counterweight bar on the front that i pick it up with...didn't want you to think i'm lifting on something i shouldn't.

i'll check at compusa...sometimes they have deals on software. that sounds like it would be simple to use , showing the file size according to the setting you choose.

There isnt enough beer, and if there was, by the time you were done, you would have probably mowed half the neighborhood including flower beds, mailboxes, bushes, street signs, and our neighbors pond! (not going there  )

Also check out those digital camera starter packs. They sometimes come with some decent software (how i got mine), a camera case, rechargable batteries+charger, ect. Photoshop is a great program, and I love their web feature, but it may be a bit overkill for what you need (unless you are editing out collateral damage, holes in walls, fires, ect from the pics you are showing us). May want to poke around download.com for some freeware editing programs. The stuff your doing is some of the most basic things.

I bought one of those Bobcats when I was building my house. I got a few flats until someone mentioned about having them foam filled. That sounded like a good idea, until I got the bill... 300 bucks! Anyhow, when I was done building, I sold the skid-steer for the same price I bought it for (used). All it cost me to use it for a few years was the fuel and the 300 bucks I spent on getting the tires foam filled. Not too bad, I suppose.

IF you can find a pre-owned machine thats in good shape and buy it for the right price as you did...there's no problem selling them & breaking even.

I'm not saying Bobcat is the best skidloader...everyone has their own opinions & the ones i have had never had any major problems...but they are the easiest to sell.
and Bobcat excavators are the only ones MADE IN THE USA.

i have another one with steel tracks over the tires...it's more of a PIA when you get a flat...so 2 years ago when i bought new tires & had them filled with soft foam - the foam cost more than the tires!

If the files are on your computer, you can drag and drop and it should open up in a new window. I"m personaly a desktop junkie, anything I pull off my camera goes somewhere on my desktop. Easy to find (should be a desktop icon under file>open, or c:\windows\desktop if your running win 98)

The resize and auto brightness (love that button) should be along the top. When you save, do a 'save as' There should be a option button. HIt it and you get to tweak your file quality (which i think can be set as a default in preferences). I normaly go about 50-60 percent unless its something very high detail.

Have fun

You didnt mention ponds. Ive never put a mower in one, but have a golf cart :D

ok to start...the drag & drop worked :)
i got pics and was trying some stuff with the option in the right side window...i reduced the quality all the way to 0 and it was still too big to upload.
then i had to help wife cut ornamental grasses & butterfly bushes

ok...i have a break while she's loading trailer :)
i opened pic again and was reducing quality again and i clicked on the X at top of window...it's gone and i can't find it :(
pic is there, but not the right side window with all the options
be back later...can't let the wife run out of work.

i found it - COMMON TASKS - restored it :)
the pic is 1370x845 jpeg 140kb...which is too large to post
under FILE TASKS i click on SAVE and it brings up the IMAGE QUALITY and i move it all the way to 0 ...on top under FILE i click on SAVE AS and SAVE and the pic ended up being 196kb
I must be doing something wrong!

Mr T

woah nelly!
Thats bigger then most people's display resolutions.
Kick it down to about 400Width and it should fit no problem. YOu should crop a very large image down to what it is focusing on.

People with dialup will also not say such bad things about you too.

MR T - great pics...very clear...how did you get them all in 1 post?

this morn...5 a.m...i think i found a way in the HP program to reduce pic...there was a box with the pixels in it...i took a pic from 200+ and lowered it to 100...and it went from the 140kb to 57kb. didn't have time to try to post it.

your project looks like it's coming along nicely

oh yeah...i'll have a POND pic for you in a couple days

Mr T

How did I get them all in one post? Admins can be bribed very easily.. All i gotta say. Send a few bucks (deer meat also works) and you get a little extra padding.. If you need 'that' address to send the money to, let me know. I prefer only cash though.

Pics were at 60 on the quality scale. Unless you are wanting to read the labels on my pipes you dont really need to go much higher.

Thanks, hope to be wrapping it up very soon..

Yea, I wanna see what you put in the pond. Cant show you pics of my accident... that whole evidence thing you know..... :D
