I bought a house that has the washing machine drain into the sump pump pit. The sump pump then pumps the water up to the sewer line which is 5 ft above the basement floor. I want to cut a hole in the sewer line and connect the washing machine drain hose thru this hole into the sewer line. What do I have to do for venting ? Anything required ? Should I worry about sewer gas backing up thru the washing machine hose ?
Thanks,
Joe

A washing machine is not allowed to be directly connected to a sewer line. A washer may be connected to a stand pipe 1 1/2" diameter but not over the maximum hieght allowed by the washer manufacturer. A washer will not work right if pumping too high due to maximum pumping capacity concerning lift. A washer will drain by gravity if hose is too low. You are required a daylight connection allowing the washer drain hose to hook into a standpipe with air around that hose. No direct connection to a sewer line is allowed. This is why you have a sump pump to do the pump lift for your washer and allow for the daylight connection not directly connecting to the washer stand pipe. Minimum trap and dain size is 2".

Hope this helps
