I am going to be installing a new redwood fence and was wondering what type of nail to use. Am I okay with hot-dipped galv or should I use stainless steel nails? Do the galv nails cause staining? Do the big box stores sell stainless nails?
Thanks for any help!

use the stainless steel - with so many nails being imported, i've seen some galv.that were poor quality.
they even have S.S. that are painted to match some stains...red,grey,tan.
if you're around salt water, use type 316 stainless.
Not sure about availability...a local builders supply stocks them around here.

Lowes has 'Primeguard Ten' exterior screws from Grip Rite. I ended up grabbing them, as they were the only thing in the size that I needed and not that much more expensive. They are coated with some greyish stuff to resist being attacked by treated wood or staining. I ran them in with my drill and the bit didnt tear up the coating. They seem pretty decent. Im sure they have nails in this too, though might might be a bit overkill for redwood. The color should be ok with redwood once it starts to weather.
