simple (hopefully) usb issue

have a computer with a usb port both on the front and back of the box. front one no longer works...probably been bumped one too many times. so rather than a lifetime of flip-flopping my modem and printer usb cables when i use one or the other i bought a cheapo 2 port usb hub. however, when i've got it in, the computer doesn't even start up completely. if i plug it in AFTER starting up, it doesn't operate.

suggestions, anyone?

The key word here is "cheapo"....

Is it a powered USB hub? USB 2.0 hub?

If it's not powered, you're probably over the power limit with hooking up a printer and a modem to it.
