Couple questions regarding baseboard heaters :

Is there a code restriction on mounting things above the baseboard heater like towel bars or coat racks ?
I was told that only two heaters can be run off 12-2 wire. Is that true or is it 3850 watts total ?
What's the limit on the thermostat ?

Another side question. What's the blue coloring on breakers for ?

Thanks

I was just working on a jobsite (not as an electrician, because that I'm not) and they finished up the bathrooms with the towel bars around 4' up from the baseboard. I don't believe there is any restriction, but common sense tells you not to hang your towels so it's stuffed inside the heater.

Assuming your baseboard heaters are 240v and 12-2 red has a capacity of 20A, your max is 4800W or about 3800W at 80% (maybe homer can clarify this, I thought I read that you can run circuits for heaters at 100%?).

The wattage of your baseboard heater will determine what you can run on the circuit - obviously two 2500W heaters can't go on a 240v 20A circuit.

Finally, my first guess is the breaker is probably a FPE stab-lok, because that's the only company I know of that colors the switch portion of the breaker. However, I have heard stories of Cutler Hammer doing so in the U.S. We don't see too many FPE panels around here (normally CH, SQD or ITE (ack)), but I'm pretty sure the colors relate to the aperage. For instance, blue = 15A, red = 20A, etc.

Good news on those towel bars .
The breakers are federal pioneer . But there are black 15 amp and blue . The blue seem to run to circuits with gfi's
The heater circuit in question had two 1250 heaters on it. I wanted to add a 1250 and a 300 watt heater. If I could have squeezed the 3 on one thermostat I would have dropped the 300 w. But as I was told - I strung a whole new 12-2 line from a two pole 240 brealer with new thermostat to the 1250/300 heaters . Was a lot more work but looks like I'm safe anyway .
