View Full Version : Transition Strip Too Short

I went to get a T-strip moulding for the transition between my new laminate floor and my old hardwood floor. I was told that the moulding was only sold in 6ft 6in lengths. What's with that?
I need an 8 foot length. Any recommendations how I can join two lengths with an invisible seam? Would I be best to cut it at a 90 degree angle, or maybe make a 45 degree scarf joint?

I ran into the same problem. I did a 45 deg scarf joint on two 4 ft pieces, glued the wood together and let it dry, then cut it to the right length. The seam is nearly invisible and more importantly my wife is happy with the work.

Question here... if you make the 45 in the two pieces, would you offset the splice in the opening or center the splice? I'm just wondering which way would be more obvious? This laminate flooring is pretty affordable now, but they really soak you for the "special" pieces. I wonder if a local millwork shop could make up the transition piece in the length you need for an affordable price?

If you have a router and basic set of bits, you can make your own in any continuous reasonable length you want. Just an idea.

I've already bought the t-strip, so I guess I'll try and see what the splice looks like. If it's too ugly, then I'll make my own moulding. Just what I need, more work
Oh, MD, there's no 'good' place for a splice. It's a joint between an open-concept kitchen/ dining area. I'll have to make the joint as 'invisible' as possible. I think I'll put the joint in the area with the lightest traffic.
