I have a spindle railing at the top of my stairs, overlooks the entry area. The spindles are 4 and 3/4 inches from one another. Is this a building code violation? They were installed when the home was built but someone told me they should not be more than 4 inches apart. Thanks

Yes the maximum spread between spindles are so a 4" ball can not pass through that open space. Easily solved by adding a wood filler on each spindle if wife accepts. A second option is a lattice or cross in the open space.
Good Luck

I believe if it met code at the time it was built, you will not have to change anything. It should be grandfathered in.
