ok, i have a question about insulating my upstairs ceiling. It is a cape with the rear dormered. The joists for the flat ceiling are 2 x 6's and the rafters are also 2 x 6's above the joists.

My question is i am gonna shoot for r-38 value, about 12 inches of insulation.

now how do i install 1 foot of insulation in the rear where the joists meet the rafters, there are not soffit vents in the rear of the dormer.

if this is confusing, please let me know wand i will try to explain it better.

YOu are required vents high and low in each attic. Normally this is done by soffit vents then roof vents up high. How are your creating your required venting of that attic? This is the first more important question.

The area where the wall meets the ceiling you are required to install styrofoam shutes to ensure a 1" open air space to allow air to flow from the soffitt vents into the attic then out the higher vents. Minimum vents required for an attic space if 1 square inch of vent per 150 cubic foot of the area of the attic involved.

Sounds like you are missing proper ventilation this will cause you build up of mold as well as rot due to moisture in that attic. Might want to check this concern.

i have soffit vents along the whole front of the house, but the back is dormered, so there are no soffit vents in the rear.
