i tried doing a search on this but couldn't find anything relevant to my question:

I need to put in some 12v items for my automboile...I was thinking of using a toggle switch. I have access to a 12v car lighter and the fusebox. How would one go about using these "switches"...i.e. where do i connect the wires? I need to run three items simulatenously, independently, or none or at all. And, is it easier to connect to the headlights or dim lights or just have it's own independent mechanism for on/off? thanks-

Going to need more detail specifically. The planned use of the equipment and specifically what each piece of equipment is. Then we can better design what you are attempting. Right now I know you have an electrical load you wish to add, but what that load is or is used for and when is not within our knowledge. We need the details including what type and year of car you are installing in. This too will make a difference in you plan.

Curious

i need to install a digital compass, and two sets of neon lights (probably altogether at most 100-150w)...The car is a basic small 2002, nissan, 4-door compact sedan. hope that helps..if you need additional information let me know...

Look in the fuse block for "acc." short for accessory. If you find a spade there then plug in your hot wire not being black commonly red and being the hot wire. Then look for a group of common terminals on one block with black wires. Plug your ground in there. Then separate those two wires and test for voltage. If you have no voltage then turn your key on and see if you have voltage. If you read 12 volts then you have your power source. Don't forget to install a fuse on that ACC connection to provide power through the fuse block.

Hope this helps

whew! i'm completely lost I Need very basic directions first. I was told to "splice" the wire into 3 to use three items..What is splicing? I do not have a volt meter to check the voltage. Is there a safe way to get around this? I think the basic things i need to know is where the wires go and how many wires there should be...let's start there. Thanks for your patience!

YOu have a computer in your car that will react adversly if you do not pick up your power source either direct from the battery or from the fuse blox where you should find an empty spade marked ACC.

You will need two wires one positive from the ACC fuse and one ground from the terminal block where all the black wires are connected on that terminal block.

Connect only one item so it works then you can connect the other items onto that power source one at a time. You try to do all at once and you are going to get confused.

It is best that before you connect to your fuse block that you disonnect your battery to avoid any shorts to ground that may waste your computer.

I am a bit concerned that if you don't have enough knowledge to connect a basic circuit to your fuse block you may be inviting causing damage to your computer system in your car. This would not be a pretty picture and this mistake that could waste your computer will cost quite a bit to repair.

Think this out before you do anything.

If you want to proceed then study what has been said and try and sort out in your mind how to do this project. Just connect in one of your items. Then if you are successful it is only repetitive to connect in the other two items one at a time. Try and do all three at once and you are going to get confused.

Be careful. Decide if you want to take this on or hire a mechanic to do this project. It shouldn't be very expensive to hire it done and if you are weak in knowledge concerning elecrical work you may do something that can severely damage your car's electrical system.

Let us know what you decide, it is your risk you must make the decision whether to hire it done or take the chance.

Good Luck
