I’m installing XPS rigid foam insulation in an unfinished basement.
There are 1x2 fir strips on the wall already. Should the insulation panels be installed between the firing strips directly against the concrete block or attached over the firing strips leaving an air gap between the insulation and the exterior wall. I’ve heard that leaving the air gap will allow for better drying and evaporation. Near as I can tell ther is no exterior insulation but damproffing apears to have been used. There are no interior leaks or seepage but I'm in New Jersey which gets cold in winter and pretty humid in the summer. Which is the correct way to do it.
