We recently had to boost 208v to 240v for a kiln. We were not sure how to wire the transformer and got help from someone who knew how but not why. Well I’m curious George. I want to know why. On the label it says for a 32v boost connect h2h3, connect x2x3. That was easy, just wire nut H2 to H3 and X2 to X3. Now the part I don’t get. It says ON LINES H1-H4 and X1-X4. What we did was this
208 to 240. H2-H3 Tied, X2-X3 Tied,

X1 is one of the Primary 208 [Line] & goes to one pole of double pole breaker.

H1. Tie 2 to wires to H1, so there are 3 wires Tied. One goes to Primary 208[Line] the other pole of double pole breaker & one goes to Secondary 240 [Load]

X4-H4 are Tied with another wire that goes to one of the secondary 240 [Load] so there are 3 wires Tied & 1 goes to 240 [Load].

Question – Why does this work and how can you tie a primary & secondary together - X4-H4.
Thanks for your help.

What you installed is commonly called a "buck-boost transformer". This is not a 208 to 240 transformer. Your transformer was connected for "boost". The code calls this an "autotransformer", since the primary and secondaries are physically interconnected and not just magnetically coupled. See this link from Acme Electric, the most popular manufacturer of this type of transformer. This explains it quicker and easier than I could.

That is why I enjoy this forum so much. Everyone is so humble and lacking in self confidence. Ha Ha

Just having fun
