Wall Insulation

I have an exterior wall that I am insulating that is on partially exterior. The bottom half of the wall has an interior space on the other side of it. The top half is truely exterior. Can I just insulate the top half of the wall or will this create a moisture problem for the bottom half?

from what i have leanred in the last few weeks, there is no reason to insulate interior walls, only exterior walls....if the space on the other side of the bottom is living, i would say dont insulate it.

I picture your wall might be a shared wall in a bi level home. The bottom half of the wall is shared with the top half of an interior wall in another room. The top half of your wall is an exterior wall, sticking out beyond the roof of the adjacent room. I've seen insulation installed in these type of areas in three ways:

1) the whole bay is insulated, top to bottom
2) the "exterior wall" portion of each bay is insulated, with the insulation cut off square at the bottom, and the bottom half of the wall uninsulated.
3) the "exterior wall" portion of each bay is insulated, with the kraft paper vapor barrier wrapped under the bottom edge of each section of insulation to provide a vapor barrier between the insulated and uninsulated portion of each stud bay.

I think #1 or #3 would satisfy code. Method #1 would use more material, and method #3 would use more time. Which do you have more of?
