Hi, I am getting the following message from Windows XP:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
My CD-Rom/ DVD does not read any CDs? I can hear the wheel spinning, but it will not read. I have tried all the usual fixes (uninstall and reinstall, etc), but cannot get it going. Anyone have any ideas? thanks

Did you try 'roll back driver'? Sometimes when you get windows updates they replace current drivers with ones that are supposed to be newer versions but many times they don't work and you have to go back to the original driver. How does the drive connect? USB, PCI, or direct to MB via drives cable (usually flat cable). Go to control panel and remove the device; then do a shut down and actually disconnect the data cable (power can stay connected). Power up your PC fully. Go into control panel and make sure the drive does not show up. Do a shut down, again. Reattach the data cable and power up the PC, again. See if it auto installs the drive. Let us know results. Good luck.

I did try the roll-back driver....and we have not updated anything. But, I will try to physically disconnect the drive altogether and let you know how it works.

Well i fixed it....here is how:
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.
7. Restart your computer.
