I asked a question on the electrical forum and was told it was a building code question which I'm not really familiar with. I want to run 10 runs of 12/2 cable through holes bored in basement joists. How far from the basement wall can I bore them?

The most important aspect is keeping the holes in the center of the joist. For example, a 2x10 joist should have its holes drilled at about 4.6" from each long edge. These holes can be anywhere along its length, but it would be best to not put the holes directly in line with supporting structure (such as a concrete wall, beam, or wall above). The worst location would be in line with the edge of a supporting structure, as the joist could shear there. So just a few inches away from the wall should be fine.

So would it be okay to drill these holes about six feet from the basement wall?

No need to respond to this thread anymore as I have an understanding from what mdshunk gave on the electrical forum. Thanks all.
