I have been trying to find out if I need to obtain a permit in Canada (Ontario specifically) to install ethernet cabling within the walls of my house. If so where would I look to find the rules on installation requirements.

I have been trying to find out if I need to obtain a permit in Canada (Ontario specifically) to install ethernet cabling within the walls of my house.Ethernet is just a low voltage signaling medium so the Cat-5 cabling will be considered 'communications' cable when used for Ethernet.

OESC/CEC 60-108 - Inspection by an Inspector

(1) Communications circuits employed by a utility in the exercise of its function as a utility shall not be subject to inspection.

(2) Where the communication circuit derives power for operation from a supply circuit, the transformer or other current limiting device used at the junction of the communication and the supply circuit shall be subject to inspection by an inspector.

Technically speaking, the 'junction' refered to above in (2) is the ethernet port on your computer or 'hub'. Personally, I think that you would be laughed at if you requested an inspection of these 'junctions'.

If so where would I look to find the rules on installation requirements.Inspection or no inspection, you need to review Section 60 of the 2002 CEC/OESC if you wish to be 100% compliant.

In my opinion, for a dwelling, just avoid running cable in ductwork and provide a fire stop where the cable goes between floors and you will be OK.
