I was looking at a '94 Mazda MX3GS for a second car. The car has 170k miles on it and appears to run good.

Two Questions: I took the oil filler cap off to check for blowby and the car stuttered and stopped. ( I did this twice) Why would it do that?

How many miles is too many?

Thanks for the replys...

My best educated guess would be that the PCV valve is crudded in a fully open position. When you remove the oil cap, you create a humungous vacuum leak, and stalling results. I suspect that if the vehicle had a new PCV valve installed, this problem would disappear.
