For my attic renovation, I was to told to install a vapor barrier on all walls but not on the ceiling as that is left without a barrier to allow humidity in the living space to vent out. Is this correct? I read another post which impied this but I wanted to make sure. There will be an air gap between all rafters connecting space behind knee walls to space above ceiling. And there are soffit and roof vents near ridge (in other words attic above ceiling is vented).

Today's code requires a vapor barrier for the ceiling. Vapor barrier faces warm side. Idea is to prevent moisture from inside the home moving through the plaster/sheet rock and building up in the insulation above. Wet insulation defeats it's purpose and eventually contributes to other problems. Just make sure the insulation does not inhibit air movement through and along the underside of the roof/attic between the sofit and roof top vent. Some may disagree with this (like you have already found out). Look for more posts.
