Just wanted to add to previous subject that the oil from mower being tilted wrong also saturated air filter. This was not very noticable and prevented mower from running correctly after I got he carb cleaned out. But mower had typical too rich symptoms and discovered this quickly. Anyway definitely want to check air filter after oil in carb. Thank guys......RL

Many air filters in small engines are sponge type filters. These sponge type filters are commonly cleaned out by using gasoline to flush oil and debris from the filter. Pour gas into sponge filter then squeeze out oil and dirt. Do this a few times to clean the sponge filter. Then a small amount of clean oil is added to the filter again squeezing out the excess oil. This clean oil added acts as an attractant to adhere to dust etc. helping to catch these fines in the filter while running the engine.

Hope this helps

while wg was right about washing out the air filter, DO NOT use gas! not only is there a fire hazard if your engine backfires, but it WILL cause your foam a/f to become brittle and rot to pieces which will then be ingested by your motor. use soap and warm water. I run a small engine biz and know this to be fact! If your a/f is paper, do not wash it at all. Replace it. some of the paper filters also have a foam pre.filter, this can be washed with soap and water. After cleaning, put your foam in a plastic baggy with about a table spoon of clean 30wt oil and give it a light coating like wg offered. The baggy will help spread the oil and keep your hands clean. If this is a flat head or "L" head engine, replace the spark plug with a Champion J-19Lm. If yours is a over head valve motor you'll need a NGK BRP5ES. Trust me, I do this for a living,...Good luck. ds

Boy, and I almost strained my fingers with all that typing. Probably will hamper my ability to go fishing next summer and hold my fishing rod. May be half way through the summer before my fingers can hold that fishing rod again. Ha Ha.
