Generally CAT 5 cable is terminated at the jack with what's called "110 style punchings", pronounced "one-ten". This is accomplished with a tool called a punchdown tool, that is available at most home centers. They have two styles, a 110 style (which you need) and a 66 style which you don't really need for cat 5. Some tools do 110 and 66 style punchings. After you get the tool, and match it up to the jack, it's fairly self-explanitory how to use it.

mdshunk is assuming you are using a modular type jacks, sometime refered to as 'keystone jacks'.

They are the jacks that can be configured in varies combinations to connect video cables, surround sound systems, telephone and any other media type connections at a 1 or 2 gang type receptacle.
There is also the simple style cat 5 connectors called RJ45 crimp connectors

that also use a special crimp down tool designated for RJ45 connectors.

The connectors found on preassembled short lenghts of cat 5 have these types of connectors. This would be the same installation that your local 'cable guy' (hi, Jim Carrey) would do at your home/office modem termination.
mdshunk is the expert. I'm just a retired 'telecom guy' throwing in my .06 cents (inflation).
