My briggs 6.5 HP Intek is blowing oil out muffler. This is my first "OHV", is there a common cause, other than just needing rings or boring, in this style of motor for the oil? I service regularly but have made no adjustments to valves (or anything) in 6 years. Maybe 180 hours. Any suggestions?

Seems to me the engine is looking for an overhaul both valves and rings. The oil if blowing out as a mist part of the exhaust causing only blue smoke then most likely worn or cracked rings. If oil dripping out as oil from exhaust the valve stems or possibly a valve guide has worn allowing oil bypass from crank case through exhaust.
Strikes me it is time for a winter overhaul of the engine or new engine depending on condition of entire machine it drives.
Hope this helps

I was leaning more towards the valve stem idea because the oil is so clean and not burnt black, making me think it was leaking by somewhere not being burnt so much. I have turned the mower up, but always carb side up to clean it, thought some oil had gotten into crankcase breather. Didn't know if OHV engine was still prone to pass oil from there like old flathead version or not. Can you pull head and rebuild top end- valve guides and so forth just like a car engine? This intek has made me lazy I guess, it was just change filters plug and oil and keep mowing. I used to race karts and tear these things down for fun, but hadn't even looked hard at this engine.
Thanks for your input!

Sure, you can do these ohv's the same as a car. AND, like a car, your problem might be just a bad head gasket. I think that I would take off the head and then if the headgasket is ok, go ahead with repair of the valve system. It won't take that much of your time and if it fixes the problem, the ring job probably will not be required.

Try replaceing the breather assy (not to be confused with the air cleaner)before sinking money into rebuilding. The part cost about $6.00 USD and comes with the gasket too. B&S part number 495786 is most common. The part is located on the side of the block. It is held on by 2 bolts and looks like an access cover. When facing the spark plug (front of the motor) the breather in located on the right hand side. Minor disassy is required as the part is located behind the muffler.
This part fails after about 6 years normal duty service...(even if you took care of your machine) When you change your air cleaner you will see a hole in the air box with a methal tube attached on the underside. The tube crosses over the top of the engine case and goes striaght to the breather. The breather uses airflow from the airbox with the engine running to create a negative pressure (Vacume) inside the case. When the breather fails possitive pressure builds in the case and forces oil past the piston rings.
Hope this helped!!! crash_!
