View Full Version : Hot/Grd Reverse Electrical Outlet Problem

So the power in our bedroom went out this evening and after trying to reset the breakers (which didn't work) we plugged in a GB Electrical Circuit Tester and got a reading of Hot/Grd Reverse. We switched out one wall outlet that had a burned out plug from a long time ago but that didn't change anything. Then we tried plugging the circuit tester into another outlet in the room and the lights came back on. So we determined that this must be the bad outlet that we need to switch out.

The first socket we switched out had the basic 2 black wires and 2 white wires. Strangely though, as you can see from the pictures, the new socket has 3 black wires and 3 white wires (with one white wire being burned). (The second picture has the black wires cut.)

Is there anything I need to know or do in particular when changing this socket out? We're planning on just putting it on a socket with screws on the sides (as opposed to the one in the picture that wires can be inserted into.) And grouping 2 whites and 2 blacks on a single screw.

Very common problem with those push in back stab connections. If you get back wire receptacles then you can put all the wires under the screws.
Back wire receptacles have a plate that clamps down on the wire and you can put two wires under each screw. If you get regular receptacles then you will need to put the wires in a wire nut with a pigtail because you are only allowed one wire under a normal screw.

I would suggest as you get time you move all the wires on all your receptacles to the screws. This is a very common cause of power loss on a circuit.

The burnt neutral wire is what was giving you the hot/ground reverse reading.
