Half the ceiling tiles in my basement are in bad shape. They appear to be made of a drywall type material I can't find at the home improvement stores. I was also looking to cover them with maybe wall paper to improve their appearance. Any suggestions?

Why not just replace them all with new ceiling tiles, at least then the ceiling will look uniform.

They make a ceiling system called "Ceiling Max" that works pretty good. I've used it in our basement bathroom. Kind of like a dropped ceiling except it is tight against the ceiling joists. It still lets you remove panels if needed. All it is is plastic tracks and you get your own tiles.

I looked at new tiles and they seem so cheap and brittle. I'll check out the Ceiling Max.
