I know I need inter-connected fire alarms on each level and basement of the house as well as one in each bedroom and outside each bedroom. But what if all bedrooms entrances are on the same hall and relatively short distances between each other Do I need to place 4 alarms in the hallway or is there a minimum distance that 1 will work for 2 bedrooms (or 3 or 4)....outside the rooms...Seems like an overkill to have 4 alarms withing 10 feet or so. thanks

If all the bedrooms are in the same general area in the hall, as is typical, you only need one in the hall for all the rooms. This also serves as the required unit for the floor. If there are other bedrooms at another end of the house then you would be required to have one outside that as well.

Keep in mind. These codes are LOCAL BUILDING codes. They are NOT covered in the NEC. How smokes get wired is the jurisdiction of the NEC. How many and where they go is your building code.
