View Full Version : Don't receive subscription emails

I recently registered for this site and posted a question. I subscribed to the thread as "instant email notification". However, I haven't gotten any notifications about new replies (although there have been a few).
Nothing in my spam folder. Checked my email address in my profile and it is correct. No server-side spam filters.
Any thoughts?
thanks.

I've never subscribed to a thread, but I wonder if being a new user stops it. Your first two posts are moderated. Now that you have 3 posts, does it work any better?

Nothing yet. I tried switching my email address to a gmail account. So once someone replies to one of my threads I'll see if that makes any difference. Since I don't see any other threads in this forum related to this, I will assume I am doing something incorrectly, and it's not a server-side problem.

In looking at your profile, I see a few things that may stop it from working. I've never used this feature,so I'm guessing though....
You have nothing checked for "Automatic Thread Subscription Mode". Perhaps change that to "Instant email notification".
May also want to check the "Send Notification Email When a Private Message is Received". I'm not sure if the notifications are emailed or PM'd.
Look to see if you have any private messages in the upper right hand corner of the screen after you login. It is the bottom line of the "Welcome, thepuzzlemaster." box.

Thanks for looking into this. As it turns out after I switched my email address I got the notification that you replied (to the new email address). I will try switching it back and if I don't get the notification emails then the problem will be on my end - email related.
If I do get it after switching back, then I'd probably guess it might have to do with not having 3 posts yet. As this was the first reply after having 3 posts. (I think). I shall see what happens when I switch back. I have not made any changes to my profile yet otherwise...

Check you spam folder. It be filtering it out as spam. It could even be your provider.
The automatic thread subscription in your profile is only to default all threads to subscribed. It should not affect whether you receive them or not.

Well, it's a problem with my email. Because I switched it back to the old email address and didn't receive the notification from the latest reply in here. So unless your outgoing mail server has my mail server black-listed, it's something on my end.
I have all my incoming mail forwarded to gmail before it even has a chance to be spam filtered and I have no server-side spam filters so I don't think that's it.
I'll open up a support ticket with my hosting company to see if they can trace the problem.
thanks,
iLan

I opened up a support ticket with my hosting company. They did a check for the email address that sent my notification to my gmail account.
That email address is: dwkerr@sympatico.ca
They searched and found that no emails from that address ever reached their mail servers. So they thought perhaps the emails never got sent from your server.
Is there an administrator who could look into this on your end? I didn't see any way to contact any site admins.
Thanks!

The address you have is our admin's email address. You can also post a message here, but I haven't seen a post from Don in a long time. Wonder if he's still reading and checking things???

I have temporarily switched back to my gmail account for some testing.
I did not receive a notification email for my own post. However, my gmail account does receive all notification emails as expected.

I just peeked at your test account and did a little digging. It looks like you have email hosting through Enom.com (yea i'm nosy). Their site says that all email has spam filtering. I have a similar setup through godaddy.com (and hate it). If someone sends me a email from aol or hotmail that sticks a advertising link at the bottom it bounces email back as undeliverable sometimes. ive opened support tickets with godaddy and they respond that it tripps a phishing filter and they are unwilling to disable it.
Its been a while since ive seen the notification emails but there may be links in the email that are triggering a filter somewhere. Your hosting company is literally filtering millions (no joke) of spams out a day. They may not be finding it in their logs.
Try this. set it to notify your gmail account or create a test account for this. Then set that account to forward to your hosted account. See if it comes through that way and let me know.

That is a very clever idea. I'll try it out and see how it does.

Spam filters look for several things common in spam mail. One of them is a unsubscribe link at the bottom. THere is one there. There are links in the email. The message is generated by the board but has a email address listed thats from a different domain as the board. All these alone may not trip a filter but when you have several of them it can trip a spam filter.
If you look at the header (thanks for including it) that message passed through a handfull of different servers on its way to you. This is normal. Some are associated with our board and some may be associated with gmail or your host. Any of them may have intercepted the message too. Of course everyone will deny it to avoid scarching many megabytes or more of log files.
I would probably create a junk gmail acct and set it to forward everything to you and forget it. Its gonna be alot of work and haggling with various support people who dont really wanna dig through everything for just 1 email.
