I purchased a home built in 1900. it has a cistern in the back yard that is capped off. It is located right up against the house, I am wanting to install rain gutters that will drain into the cistern. I am needing advise on what type of pump I can use. I am wanting to use this water for my yard and flower beds.

Shallow well pump or submersible.

Old cisterns had either stone or block foundations. If you can do a quick inspect, make sure they are in good condition. You don't want water leaking back into the house.
Re-routing as many downspouts as possible might involve some careful planning. Get a raingutter type cover for the troughs to keep leaves and whatnot out. You can get a diverter. These are used to keep the initial rain water out that cleans the roofs off or is used for immeidate use or to prevent overflows.

Keep your cistern sanitized and sealed to prevent critters from getting in.
